A long-time distinguished professor was found dead on the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins on Friday afternoon. In a pair of campus-wide e-mails, CSU President, Dr. Tony Frank revealed that Professor Emeritus Gary Maciel, passed away on campus Friday afternoon. Maciel taught at CSU for 40 years. He was 79.

According to the letter from Dr. Frank Professor Maciel was:

A member of our campus community since 1971, Dr. Maciel was a scientist, educator, and inspiration to countless students, including more than 70 doctoral and master’s students who worked as part of his research group. The Gary Maciel Fellowships, established in 1998, pay tribute to his achievements in physical chemistry and honor his desire to inspire and support young scientists.

 

According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan, Professor Maciel died of a "cardiac event" near the Visual Arts Building after riding his bicycle to the CSU campus.
