Who would make a boat out of concrete? Engineering students from Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico - That's who!

The teams will race concrete canoes on Horsetooth Reservoir today as part of the American Society of Civil Engineers Rocky Mountain Student Conference being held at Colorado State University. The canoe races start at 12:30 p.m. this afternoon (Saturday, April 5) at the South Bay at Horsetooth Reservoir. Student engineering teams from CSU and 13 regional universities will participate in the event.

Why do they do it? According to the American Society of Civil Engineers:

The ASCE Concrete Canoe Competition was designed to provide civil engineering students an opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience and leadership skills by working with concrete mix designs and project management. Student teams design and build their own concrete canoes and are judged on their projects.
