The Denver Arts and Venues Public Art Program is giving artists in Colorado the opportunity to apply, and if selected, create four unique pieces that'll be featured at prominent locations around the city. The city has a budget of over $350,000 to put towards these projects, and once competed, the new pieces will also become part of the Denver Public Art Collection.

The first of the four public art projects will be a portrait of the late Denver City Councilwoman, Carla Madison. The portrait can consist of different media, and will be displayed in the Carla Madison Recreation Center (currently under construction). The second piece will also be hung inside the new center, but for this one, the selection panel is seeking something one-of-a-kind, that speaks to the historical nature of this specific area of Denver, and the uniqueness of Colfax Avenue. The artwork should also attempt to incorporate themes of movement, transportation, and the idea of a “journey.” The recreation center is scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2017. Paco Sanchez Park is going to be the location for the third piece of artwork, which is calling to represent community-based connections, the legacy of Paco Sanchez, and the overall history of the area. Finally, the fourth project is seeking an artist, or team of artists, to create an original work of art for the exterior façade of a building on the Denver Zoo’s property, which also faces City Park’s Duck Lake.

All four projects are open to any artists who currently live and work in the state of Colorado, and emerging artists are encouraged to apply.  Artists interested in submitting their work for the Carla Madison Recreation Center projects must apply no later than January 16. The application deadline for both the Paco Sanchez Park piece and the Denver Zoo/City Park project is January 23, 2017.
