Your first reaction will probably be the same as mine: "ewwww, gross!"  The ground beef you buy at the grocery store could  contain fecal matter (yes, poop!) and bacteria or other things that could make you sick.

Consumer Reports tested 300 packages of ground beef purchased in stores across the country. According to the study, every pound contained at least some bacteria that signaled fecal content. Twenty percent contained food bacteria that causes food poisoning. And one percent contained salmonella.

How to Protect Yourself

Grass-fed beef that was raised without antibiotics was less than half as likely to contain contaminants and bacteria, but no matter what beef you buy, Consumer Reports says cooking to 160 degrees Fahrenheit is the safest temperature for your meat so that the bacteria is killed. You could also just not eat hamburger. Sorry vegetarians, that's just not going to happen for me! Cook it well done and bring it on!
