Today is the 5th of May, or Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy. Not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated on September 16th.

Carlos Santana is probably one of the most popular and influential Mexican Americans to date.  Born in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico. Santana's father was a mariachi violinist, and Carlos learned to play the violin at age five and the guitar at age eight. His younger brother, Jorge Santana, would also become a professional guitarist. Santana was also heavily influenced by another Latino, Richie Valens.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, here is quite possibly the most popular song by Carlos Santana, "Oye Como Va." Which, by the way, is actually a Cuban song. In Cuba they also speak Spanish, however, so it works. In case you were wondering, the chorous translates t:

Listen how it goes
my rhythm
Good to enjoy, mulata
Listen how it goes
my rhythm
Good to enjoy, mulata-
("mulata" is a girl who is black, but it's used in a normal way, it's not offensive.)
