A recall of Blue Bell ice cream is underway.

The recall is pretty serious, as numerous cases of listeria have been linked to the products. At least five people have been infected and three have died.

However, it should be noted that the most commonly bought items by consumers have not been affected by this recall. Some of the items recalled are distributed to institutions that serve Blue Bell. Most of the pint and gallons bought by consumers are not affected by this recall.

The ice cream cups listed below were distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming via food service accounts.

According the FDA, listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

This recall in no way includes Blue Bell Ice Cream half gallons, pints, quarts, 3 gallons or other 3 oz. cups.
