John Hughes. The late writer/director just had a way of knowing what us kids of the 80s wanted in a movie. ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, ‘Weird Science’, ‘Uncle Buck’, ‘Home Alone’, ‘Pretty In Pink’, ‘Some Kind of Wonderful.’ ‘The Breakfast Club.’ The list goes on and on. Which one of his classics will be at the Rialto this weekend?

It’s the story of a day in the life of a girl, whose family has forgotten it’s her birthday. Her 16th birthday, to boot! She has to go through that day and night dealing with that, while also longing for Jake, but being hit-on by ‘Farmer Ted’. He’s not really a farmer, he’s a freshman.

John Hughes’ ’16 Candles’, from 1984, is one of my all-time favorites from the 80s. Probably because I can relate to Anthony Michael Hall’s character so much. Geek city. Actually, I think my friends would say I was more like John Cusak’s character. ‘Dave, you WISH you were Ted.’  There’s also the fact that I totally had a crush on Molly Ringwald. True story.

This is one movie that I love to quote-along with: ‘I’m a gambling man, by nature. I say go for it.’ ‘Don’t embarrass me in front of his folks.’ ‘You know, black and white would capture the moment so nicely, wouldn’t it?’ ‘Fresh breath is a priority in my life.’ ‘JAKE!’ ‘My little brother paid a buck to see your underwear.’  Too much fun!

For $8 this Friday night (July 15, 2016) at 7:30, you can see the whole movie, without commercials (everybody knows it’s on TV all the time), at Loveland’s Rialto Theater with a bunch of folks who ALSO love the movie! Get downtown early! We can have drinks and then hit the show!   I may even break out my ‘geek dance!’

Say- Did you know that Viggo Mortensen was up for playing the role of ‘Jake?’ Weird, right?  Get ticket details from The Rialto HERE!
