The hot August weather that we've been having has not only made us sweat, but increased the chance that we'll get bit and infected with West Nile Virus.

Weld County has three zones that they monitor weekly to find out what the 'Vector Index' is at each zone. On Tuesday, August 20, 2019, they announced that all three of the zones had seen an increase.

With those increases come the increased chance that a human could be bitten by a Culvet mosquito - the mosquitos that carry West Nile Disease.

The zones monitored are: the Greeley/Evans/Kersey area, the Johnstown/Milliken/Platteville area, and the Firestone/Dacono/Ft. Lupton area.

Symptoms for West Nile Disease do not show for three to 14 days, so it's very important to protect yourself, using the 'Four D's' method:

DRAIN - Drain any standing water around your home. Tires, cans, flowerpots, etc.

DUSK/DAWN- Mosquitos are most active between dusk and dawn. Limit your time outodorrs during those times.

DEET - Look for insect repellents that conatin DEET. Also effective are repellents containing picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol.

DRESS - Wear long sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors during active mosquito times.
