Denver Botanic Gardens’ Corpse Flower or Titan Arum is finally blooming! It usually blooms 24-48 hours. The very unique plant is best known for smelling like rotting flesh. The smell of the plant which comes from central Sumatra draws flies and other insects for pollination.

What Does the Corpse Flower Really Smell Like?

According to Wikipedia: Analyses of chemicals released by the flower shows why the flower is so smelly. Each of the chemicals released when it blooms emits a different odor.

  • dimethyl trisulfide (like limburger cheese)
  • dimethyl disulfide, trimethylamine (rotting fish)
  • isovaleric acid (like sweaty socks)
  • benzyl alcohol (a sweet floral scent)
  • phenol (like Chloraseptic)
  • indole (like mothballs).
