This is the second day in a row of school closures in Northern Colorado... and while driving into work this morning, I couldn't help thinking to myself "Man, these kids today have it way too easy!I don't see 4 feet of snow on the ground.  My 1995 front wheel drive sedan is navigating the roadways just fine.  What gives?  It seems as though my 8 year old is getting a 3 or 4 day weekend every two weeks or so.  Every time I turn around he's got another day off.  Oh, and lets not forget about early release days...you add all that into the fact that they've had 2 days off this week for cold weather...  WTH?!  When I was a kid, the only thing that kept us home from school was a federal holiday, internal bleeding, or 6 feet of snow on the ground.  In fact, we rarely had indoor recesses.  If it was frigid outside, you wore 17 layers of clothing to school and then you were prepared to play outside.  I remember spending half the recess to get ready to play outside and then having to go pee which meant I had to disrobe and start over!  My son wasn't experiencing any of the aformentioned issues when I walked out the door this morning to scrape a thick layer of ice off my car to go to work, however, he's currently sitting at home slipping into video game coma!  Now I do feel for the students that would have had to wait for their buses out in the cold weather because that would be dangerous...however, wouldn't be easier for a parent to find a way for their child to stay warm for a short period of time or drive them to school themselves and get to work late rather than a parent having to find a way to keep their child occupied/supervised for the entire school day or even miss work?  Last time I checked, schools were still being equipped with heaters and furnaces!
