It looked like it might be a police car, the 'officer' did not look like a real officer.  A woman in Fort Collins made the right call. FCPS says to be on the alert.

Fort Collins Police Services released the description they have of what appears to be a police impersonator who stopped a woman in her vehicle on Monday night.

According to FCPS, it happened at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday night (February 18, 2019), as an unmarked Black Dodge Charger with emergency lights in its dashboard pulled over a woman. The man's uniform didn't look right and he wouldn't provide any credentials, so the woman refused to get out of her car as instructed, and kept the doors locked and drove away.

Police searched the area, but couldn't find the Charger. The impersonator is described as a white man 6' tall, brown eyes, dark hair, in his late 20s/early 30s.

FCPS provided tips on what you should do if YOU suspect that an officer is NOT an officer:

  • Call 911. Dispatchers can help determine if the person stopping you is really an officer or not.
  • Turn your hazards (lights) on. This tells the person behind you that you're aware and taking action, and it also draws the attention of other passing vehicles.
  • Stop in a well-lit, public area. (That one can be tough, as you may not immediately think it's an imposter.)
  • Remain respectful but cautious.
  • Ask to see a badge or identification. FCPS officers also have business cards that you can request. The more ID they can provide, the more legit.
  • If you're concerned for your safety, tell the 911 dispatcher and follow their instructions. Your safety is important to FCPS.
  • Try to remember as many details as possible about the person who stopped you and their vehicle so you can provide that information to police.
