Get Rid of Old Paint and Chemicals at the Fort Collins Hazardous Waste Collection

It's always hard to know what to do with the leftover paint from a project or a toxic cleaner you no longer use. It's not okay to just throw them in the garbage. Fort Collins is hosting a Hazardous Waste Collection on Saturday, September 10th. Please read through the list below and dispose of these items properly.

Residents are invited to drop off non-leaking household chemicals. Commercial waste is not accepted.

Items accepted:

  • household batteries
  • paint and pesticides
  • CFL bulbs
  • cleaning and automotive products
  • vitamins and supplements
  • personal care products, including hair products and lotions
  • mercury containing items such as thermostats, thermometers and button-shaped batteries.

Items not accepted include tires, e-waste, explosives, asbestos, bio-waste (needles, bandages) and pharmaceuticals*. Visit fcgov.com/recyclingcenters for disposal options for non-accepted items.

*Pharmaceuticals – Safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications at Fort Collins Police Services, 2221 S. Timberline Rd., weekdays, 8 a.m.-8 p.m., and weekends, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Items not accepted: needles/sharps, oxygen containers, mercury thermometers, pressurized canisters, chemo/radioactive substances or illicit drugs.

The risk of fire, explosion and spills exists when transporting hazardous waste products, so please prepare items safely for transport, following these rules:

  • store items upright in boxes or tubs, not loose bags
  • keep similar items together (do not stack)
  • containers must be sealed and cannot leak
  • acids and oxidizers must be separated
  • keep items away from children and pets

Prescription Drug Take-Back

Fort Collins Police Services, 2100 S. Timberline Rd., has a year-round prescription drug take-back program that operates Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 am.-6 p.m. For information about other disposal options, please visit Who Recycles What.
