Highway 34 to Close in Big Thompson Canyon for 9 Months
The Colorado Department of Transportation plans to close U.S. Highway 34 for 9 months to repair the damage done by the flood in 2013.
The highway will close between Estes Park and Loveland from late October to June 2017 while CDOT performs major rock-blasting and construction work. Only Big Thompson Canyon residents will be able to access the 30-mile stretch while CDOT gets to work, starting on the east end of the canyon between mile markers 77 and 80.
July to October 2016
US 34 will be open to through traffic in both directions; however, between mile points 77 and 79 (just east of Drake) drivers might encounter short-duration lane closures. During rock blasting work at mile point 78.4, traffic will be stopped for 20 to 30 minutes during the blast to maintain public safety.
There will be construction activity between mile points 77 and 81 seven days a week and some of this work will require lane closures.
There aren't many options. You can take Colorado Highway 66 or U.S. 36. Highway 34 will absolutely not be an option during the closure.
