Larimer County Inmates Starting New Fort Collins Farmers Market

Another farmers market is launching in Fort Collins this month. But its unlike any others already operating.

The new addition is The Larimer County Community Corrections Farmers' Market, which is run by clients of the men's and women's intensive residential drug and alcohol treatment program.

The 21 to 90 day program helps clients confront their addictions and allows them to give back to the community, in the hopes that they can prosper in society after being released from the program.

The clients do all the farming themselves, harvesting produce such as vegetables, herbs, and fruit. All of the proceeds from the market are donated to local charities. Program directors say this is one of the best forms of therapy to aid in their recovery.

Starting August 23 the market will be open from 8 a.m. until noon every Friday. It is located at the Bath Garden Center and Nursery, off of Prospect and Timberline Road in Fort Collins.

The garden center has donated to the farmers' market many times over the years. This year, they're providing fruit trees for the market's new orchard.

The Loveland Garden Club is another important donor for the market, according to Larimer County Community Corrections Assistant Director Dana Hersch. "This is a great partnership for our agency," said Hersch of the Club's $580 donation for 2019.

Last year's market raised around $1,000 for local charities. This year, proceeds will go to Serve 6.8, a local non-profit which provides resources to people in need of care.
