Van Buren Elementary School, located at 1811 W. 15th St. in Loveland, was briefly put on secured perimeter status Wednesday morning, following reports of gunshots heard in the area.

Around 10 a.m., Thompson School District texted the parents of children who attend Van Buren Elementary, to notify them that the school had been put on secured perimeter status, but that all students and staff members were safe. A secure perimeter is when the school locks its exterior doors and brings everyone in from outside, though classes still remain in session. During this time, Loveland police officers canvassed the area around the Locust Park Apartments and Locust Park Professional Building on West 15th Street, just north of Eisenhower Boulevard, where two people had allegedly heard shots being fired sometime around 9:30 a.m. Officers thoroughly investigated the area, but could not confirm that gunshots had actually been fired, nor could determine the source of the noises that had been called in.

The safety precautions at Van Buren Elementary remained in effect for about half an hour while law enforcement searched the surrounding areas.
