Tips for Renting with Pets

Finding and keeping a pet-friendly rental
With rent inching higher and higher and vacancy rates remaining low
in our community, it may be difficult to find a new home, especially
one that welcomes pets.

Housing issues is a real reason why pets find themselves at our
doorstep with nowhere else to go. Larimer Humane Society wants
to help animals stay in their happy homes with the families that love
them the most.

In order to enhance our pet-friendly community and provide
resources to reduce housing barriers that may put pets at risk, check
out our pet-friendly housing list on our web page, here:

Additionally, here are some tips for pet owners to be successful tenants:

Plan Ahead: There are many pet-friendly rentals in Larimer County
but it can take time to find the right place.

Make a Good Impression: It may be easier for landlords to decline
a pet owner over the phone but seeing your well-behaved pet may
win them over. Consider asking the landlord to bring your pet to the
showing so they can get acquitted.

Provide a Pet Resume and References: Photos of your pet, a
letter of recommendation from a past landlord and information
on arrangements for them when you are not home, such as crate
training and daycare can go a long way in demonstrating that you’re a
responsible pet owner.

Be Honest: Hiding your pet and signing a lease that doesn’t allow pets
is not a solution. Stay honest and patient so that you and your pets
find the right home.

Do Your Part: Be sure that your cats and dogs are licensed and are
current on their vaccinations. Lay rugs to avoid scratching the floors,
pick up after your pets, crate train dogs to prevent unexpected
accidents or damage, monitor barking and behaviors that may cause
friction with neighbors and ensure animals are secure at all times and
will not run loose.

Demonstrating to your landlord that you’re a thoughtful, responsible
tenant with well-loved pets will help keep your landlord happy and
help strengthen our pet-friendly community.
