Milliken Facing Almost $8 Million in Fines for Water Testing Issues

The town of Milliken may be in some hot water, no pun intended. The Colorado Department of Health and Safety have laid down the gauntlet.

Back in May of 2014, city officials in Milliken were notified by the Colorado Department of Health and Safety that they had been violating state mandated guidelines on monitoring, testing, and reporting of waste water from their water treatment facilities.

In fact, turns out they had/have been in violation for over two years. The fines are $10,000 a day which adds up to just over $7.5 million in fines.

Milliken treats the drinking water through a reverse osmosis system and during that process, selenium is part of the waste water which is pumped into the Little Thompson River which is allowed with a permit. Now it seems that someone in Milliken decided to stop testing and turning in the reports. On top of that, their sewage treatment plant also discharges into the Little Thompson and they are not testing and turning in those reports either.

Testing of both plants are required for obvious reasons and results are supposed to be turned in every month. Town officials have been sent non-compliance notices every month since they stopped testing to no avail so the Colorado Department of Health and Safety was forced so issue a cease and desist order which you can read by clicking on the link below.
